DAY
1
You
will travel 290 km by car, with a few stops along the way: stop at
Serian town for refreshments. You may wish to do some last minute
shopping, for insect repellent or for gifts for the Ibans at Serian
or visit a fascinating native fruit and vegetable market. The other
stops include a visit to the pepper farm and stop at a place where
you can observe plenty of wild orchids and also pitcher plants,
insect eating plants. The last stop will be at "Lachau", a
small up-country Chinese village, where we will stop for lunch. Here
you can still observe barter trading being held between the natives
of Kalimantan, the Chinese shop owners and the natives of Sarawak.
After lunch we proceed to the final stage of the journey, and arrive
at the beautiful Batang Ai Lake. Proceed by motorised longboat for
about one hour, crossing the Batang Ai reservoir and then for
another
1/2
hour on the tributary of the Batang Ai River to reach the longhouse.
The journey passes through scenic views, rice fields, fish farms,
going against the rapids, paddling and poling in clear water to
reach the longhouse and check-n at the guesthouse. Proceed to the
longhouse for a warm welcome by the natives, which comprises
"miring" (welcoming rituals) and cultural dances. Tour the
longhouses, watch the natives at work, such as making mats, baskets,
handicrafts and mending fish nets. Join the natives in their daily
chores, like feeding their livestock, washing clothes, swim the
river or just relax at the riverbank. After dinner at the longhouse
with the headman, socialise with the longhouse dwellers, where there
will be presentation of gifts and more cultural performances.
