Spread over 43 sq
km, it is the largest orangutan sanctuary in existence. Sepilok is
one of only four orangutan
sanctuaries in the world. Here in Sabah, orangutans that have
been abandoned by their mothers, or were formally in captivity,
are rehabilitated until they are fit enough to be returned to the
wild. The apes are fed daily at a platform about 10 minutes walk
from the centre. The best time to visit is 10 am to 3.00 pm when
the primates emerge from the forest for their daily bananas and
milk.
